Here are some tips on stepping in a shred circle whether at a tournament or on someone else's turf.

  • Warm-up before stepping in a circle.
  • Look for the circles with players at or near your own skill level.
  • It's always good to ask the circle if you can join, and don't step in the place of the next pass.
  • While a hack circle is often fun with many people, a shred circle should have no more than 5 players, 3 or 4 being optimal. Don't be the 6th man; look for a circle with fewer players, and if there aren't any, ask the circle if they want to split in two circles of 3.
  • Watch the passing direction before you step in, so you don't break the flow.
  • Take only one turn when you get the bag. If you drop on your first try, pick it up and toss to the next player. Don't self-serve, and don't expect a rebate, although you may get one.
  • Introduce yourself to the players you don't know.
  • Pay attention to the person with the bag. If you don't watch them, why should they watch you?
  • Don't carry on non-footbag conversations in the circle. Serious players want to concentrate on the game.
  • Asking advice is usually welcome, but don't go overboard. It can be hard for a player to give advice and still be focused on his own game.
  • Give props when deserved, but don't be excessive.

There is lots more to be learned just by doing it, but this will get you started on the right path, and will save you some regrets down the road.
