Starting a Circle - 2006/11/07 20:33 Alright i've been playing footbag for acouple months now and kids at my school want to get in to it. the only problem is they all want to be in one big circle! like 9! i have tried to explain to them that to start they should buy a footbag and practice in a beginner circle. they don't understand and i dont want them to get frustrated and quit because they're not good enough to play with the better players at the school. how should i help them out. ( I've pointed them to this site already) Shred till your Dead

Re:Starting a Circle - 2006/11/10 14:12 Good question. I'm unsure if this is the best place to be asking it or not - it may be better to ask at www.footbag.org/forum.

Anyway here is my suggestion. First be thankful you have so many people to play with. I'm lucky to be able to play in a circle of three people. I think there are two things you should do. First I think playing with them in those big circles shouldn't be a problem so long as you still have fun and if you can work hard and learn some tricks to impress people with, soon more people will be interested in learning their own skills. The other thing is to play by yourself when that's what you want to do. You don't need to play with them all the time. I remember when I was first learning and I used to still play a lot with other people but I'd also sometimes just go off and play by myself, trying to hit a new move or something. I think a combination is good - some of those I originally played with ended up learning tricks too although were never as passionate about it as I was. It's an issue of finding a balance. Maybe none of those guys will want to learn freestyle. If that's the case there may be little you can do. You should do whatever you feel happiest about doing. These days I go play at the local market every week. Sometimes I have nobody to play with and other times I have 5 or 6 people to play with. While there are times when I'd prefer to play by myself, I never refuse to play with anybody because ultimately I'd much rather have somebody good to play with than not and I am happy to spend a few hours playing with people in the hope that I will inspire them to work hard and get some skills. Maybe that will never happen but personally I'd rather try and fail than not try at all.

Re:Starting a Circle - 2006/11/11 00:36 thanks that really helps.( i'll check out the sight you suggested.) what i've done is asked them if they really were going to try to learn some moves. those who said no i asked them to start a circle just for kicking around the footbag. now there is a good size circle for free style. again thanks for the tips and i do play by myself to practice tricks.
