Re:Tip advice and login - 2006/09/18 23:37
Well, my reply is well overdue. Sorry about that, Jeremy. Just extremely busy with my non-footbag life. To answer your questions...
1) I'll have to look into the login on front page option. Implementing the code is easy, but I have to check that it doesn't bypass security measures of the login page.
2) I haven't had time to work on the tricks section in a while, but I've been formulating how to improve its structure so that people (teachers AND students) might be more encouraged to use it. For one thing it is way too "click-heavy", i.e. when trying to look at lots of different moves, it takes too to navigate through all the pages. Instead of the current method of putting videos (Clipper stall by Chad) inside Containers (Clipper) inside more Containers (Foundation) to categorize moves, I was thinking of opting for a searchable list. I would like to keep the "Fundamentals, Foundation and Advanced" groups because it makes it easier (I think!) for players to seek out the moves at their level, but inside those categories would just be the videos in alphabetical order. For example, in Fundamentals, "Clipper stall by Blitz, Clipper stall by Chad, Clipper stall by Jeremy, Osis stall by Jorden..," etc.
The main thing that would change is the Commenting (Tips) feature. But I have a plan, and this relates more specificaly to your question. Instead of having people post their tips directly to the 'Trick Containers', I could start a Tips forum in the Forum (and make it visible without being logged in, the whole forum that is). The Forum would add a lot of great features, like tracking replies to Topics, searching users' posts (such as those who give good advice), and many more. The only time-consuming part for me would be starting new topics for each trick and posting links to the videos (from the Tricks section) in each topic, though this might not be necessary.
If anyone has an opinion or wants to help, please reply or email me directly.
Jeremy, it would be great if you would submit move demos! Just make your best guess at what you should contribute based on what you think is missing, and feel free to email me with any questions. As far as encoding goes, it would be great to have two versions of everything, e.g. WMV & MP4.
And while I'm here, let me just say that although I have zero time to work on Flipsider, others are encouraged to contribute. It only takes a minute of my day to approve (publish) an article/video/etc. as opposed to actually crafting them myself, which unfortunately seems to be the only way to get new content on this site. Please help.
Regards, E____
